DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) — Officials are trying to locate the owners of old veterans' grave markers that were found in an abandoned funeral home in Dothan.
City Commissioner James Reading says someone dropped the ball by letting the gravestones go unclaimed.
One of the markers was for a veteran who died in 1981. The most recent death occurred in 1998.
The Veteran's Administration provides grave markers as a benefit to people who served in the armed services. More than 50 were found behind the old Levite Funeral Home in Dothan after it went out of business.
Area funeral homes tried to help locate the proper graves for the markers, and about 40 have since been placed in cemeteries. Officials are trying to find to proper location for the remaining markers.
