MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Montgomery officials, aware the city may possess important historical documents that have been stored away and forgotten, want to create a system to identify them so they can be protected.
Several years ago, boxes containing the mug shots of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr. and other leaders in the civil rights movement were nearly mistaken for trash and thrown away.
The city created a records management program about three years ago, but it does not have historical archives.
City records manager Tom Register has been setting aside records that might be considered historical documents, but an organized system is needed.
The city is applying for a grant that would provide seed money needed to start the process of discovering what historical records exist and creating an inventory.
