Auburn golf tied for #14

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Auburn's Cydney Clanton and Haley Wilson each carded even-par 72s Friday in the first round of the Mason Rudolph Championship, leading the sixth-ranked Tigers to first-round 294 (+6) and a tie for 14th.

Hosted by Vanderbilt, the Mason Rudolph Championship is a 54-hole tournament being played at the par-72, 6,281-yard Vanderbilt Legends Club North Course, the site of the 2012 NCAA Championship. The three-day tournament features eight teams ranked in the GolfWorld top-10 and 16 ranked in the top-25.

"Cydney had a very good comeback to get back to even-par today and Haley played steady for us all day," said Auburn head coach Kim Evans. "We are still looking for that breakthrough round to get the season going in the right direction."

Clanton was 3-over at the turn, but shot a 3-under 33 on her second nine holes, including an eagle, to get to even-par on the day. Wilson, who was at 2-under at one point, finished the day with four birdies and four bogeys to finish at even-par. The pair head into the second round in a tie for 33rd.

Patricia Sanz also struggled out of the gate, making the turn at 5-over-par before eventually falling to 6-over. The junior bounced back in her last three holes, logging an eagle and a birdie to finish the day tied for 57th at 3-over 75.

Also tied for 57th is freshman Diana Fernandez at 3-over 75. Senior Karlin Beck rounds out the Auburn lineup in a tie for 79th at 6-over 78.

Competing as an individual for the Tigers was freshman Marta Sanz, the younger sister of junior Patricia Sanz. Making her Auburn debut, Marta carded a 2-over 74 to finish the day in a tie for 51st.

Individually, Wake Forest's Michelle Shin leads the way with a 7-under-par 65 in the first round. Purdue's Maude-Aimee LeBlanc, Alabama's Brooke Pancake and LSU's Tessa Teachman all are in a tie for second at 5-under 67. In all, there are 41 players at even-par or better after the first round.

In the team rankings, LSU is on top with a 10-under-par 278, followed by Purdue and California at 9-under 279. Duke is in fourth with a 5-under 283 while Georgia and UCLA round out the top five with 4-under 284s.

Action at the Mason Rudolph Championship continues at 8 a.m., Saturday with tee times off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees. Auburn is set to tee off beginning at 8:53 a.m., playing alongside Oklahoma State and Texas off the No. 10 tee.
