Late goal earns Bama soccer 1-1 draw vs Florida

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Down 1-0 with just one minute remaining, the Alabama soccer team found the back of the net to earn a 1-1 draw against No. 6 Florida, Friday night at the Alabama Soccer Stadium. With the point, the Crimson Tide remains unbeaten in Southeastern Conference play at 3-0-2 and move to 8-2-2 on the year. The Gators go to 10-1-2 overall and 4-0-1 in SEC play.

"I am so proud of how we played until the final whistle," Alabama head coach Todd Bramble said. "We never gave up hope and to get that late goal says a lot about this team. Tonight we showed we are closing the gap."

With the clock nearing the 89th minute the Crimson Tide finally broke through. The senior connection of Brooke Rogers and Victoria Frederick handed Alabama a crucial point. Frederick got behind the Gator defense and found Rogers deep in the box for a one-touch tally, her seventh goal of the season.

The Tide defense held on in the two overtime periods to give Alabama just its second point against Florida in program history. Alabama entered the game with a 0-13-1 all-time record against Florida. With the win, the Tide remain atop the western division standings and are third overall in the SEC table.

Alabama goalkeeper Justine Bernier tallied a season-best 10 saves and allowed just the one goal in the full 110 minutes of play.

The Gators opened the scoring just two minutes into the second half. Tahnai Annis tapped in a Taylor Travis cross to give Florida the early 1-0 lead.

The Gators out-shot the Tide 23-8 as Erika Tymrak led all players with seven shots, putting four on goal. Senior Rosaly Petriello led Alabama with two shots. UF goalkeeper Katie Fraine allowed the one goal and tallied one save.

The Tide return to the Alabama soccer Complex at 1p.m., on Sunday to face the 15th ranked South Carolina Gamecocks. The game will be broadcast on Tide TV with Jordan Eichenblatt calling the action. The match will mark the Power of the Pink game, sponsored by Tuscaloosa Toyota.
