LOWNDES COUNTY, AL (WSFA) - It might sound like a pep rally, and look like a PE class, but this is a math class at Central Elementary in Lowndes County. The man leading the class, Mr. Clarence Pettway. He's been teaching now for 15 years. "When I was a younger man I saw some teachers who looked like they were having fun teaching their lessons." And that's what Mr. Pettway does, he has fun.
His class is a mixture of math and high energy. He says every student has a shot to learn. v "My basic philosophy is that all students can learn, but might not learn at the same time or the same way." Mr. Pettway wants to kids throw up their hands and respond loudly, with confidence, when they know the answer. "My students realize if I'm teaching I expect them to do homework, and research on the internet, and they get excited to come back and tell you what they find."
The excitement starts with Mr. Clarence Pettway, a real Class Act.
