Auburn swimmers take SEC weekly honors

AUBURN, Ala. – Senior diver Dan Mazzaferro and freshman swimmer Emily Bos were named SEC Male Diver of the Week and SEC Female Freshman Athlete of the Week, respectively, the league office announced Tuesday.

Mazzaferro opened his final season at Auburn with a pair of first-place finishes at Alabama on Oct. 9. The meet was his first of since the

2008-09 season as he was sidelined last year with a knee injury.

Mazzaferro took first on the one-meter springboard to start competition, recording a NCAA Zone qualifying score of 328.65. He followed with another top finish, taking first on the three-meter springboard with another NCAA Zone score of 389.18.

 

"This is a great way to welcome Dan (Mazzaferro) back after having to sit out last season," head diving coach Jeff Shaffer said. "He put together a very competitive list of dives for his first competition of the year and laid the foundation for a very successful year."

 

Bos kicked off her first collegiate season strong as the Holland, Mich., product came away with three first-place finishes as the Tigers topped the Crimson Tide, 169-74. Bos opened the meet as leadoff for the winning 200 medley relay squad that finished in 1:43.14. In her lone individual event, Bos finished almost four seconds ahead of second place to win the 200 back in 1:59.88. She concluded the meet as the third leg of the winning 800 free relay that touched in at 7:35.71.

"Emily (Bos) is an outstanding person and came to Auburn with a tremendous attitude," head coach Brett Hawke said. "She is working very hard early and it is already paying off. I'm very proud of her and happy to see her be honored by the SEC."

Auburn opens its home schedule on Oct. 22 as the Tigers welcome SEC rival LSU to the James E. Martin Aquatics Center for a 3 p.m. meet. The Auburn women will face both LSU and Notre Dame that day in a tri-meet.
