Bama-Ole Miss volleyball match set for Sunday

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama volleyball team (9-11, 1-9 SEC) is slated to take on Mississippi (15-5, 9-2 SEC) Sunday, Oct. 24, in the CAVE. Opening serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. CT.

"I did not feel like our team was very energetic in the earlier match up with Mississippi," Alabama head coach Judy Green said. "Since then, we have gotten better but so have they. Mississippi is a very athletic team. It is not the greatest matchup for us, but if we can dictate the tempo and play how we want to play we can win the match."

Alabama played one of its two midweek conference matches Wednesday at Mississippi State where the Tide fell 3-1 in Starkville. Three attackers finished with double-digit kills led by sophomore Kayla Fitterer with a match-high tying 17 kills and 11 digs for her fifth double-double of the season and sixth of her career. Senior Alyssa Meuth and redshirt sophomore Leigh Moyer also finished with double-digit kills tacking on 13 and 11, respectively. Moyer had one of her best blocking performances as well tallying three block assists and a pair of block solos. Sophomore Kelsey Anderson led the match in digs with 20 and service aces with three.

Mississippi is currently leading the SEC West. Most recently, the Rebels beat Mississippi State 3-1 to sweep the season series. Mississippi is led on offense by sophomore Whitney Craven, who averages 3.18 kills per set. Sophomore Amanda Philpot has dished out a team-high 7.28 assists per set, while junior Morgan Springer averages a team-best 4.80 digs per set. At the net, junior Regina Thomas leads the Rebels with 1.27 blocks per frame. Alabama leads the overall series with Mississippi 40-16, however the Rebels won the last meeting 3-0 in Oxford on Sept. 17.

A host of alumni will be recognized during the intermission between sets two and three on Sunday. In addition, the 2010 team will sign autographs following the match.
