Bama 3rd after first round of Isleworth Collegiate Invite

WINDERMERE, Fla. – Alabama's fourth-ranked men's golf team fired a 3-over-par 291 in the opening round of the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational at the par-72, 7,544-yard Isleworth Country Club on Sunday.

The Crimson Tide is just one shot back of first-round co-leaders TCU and Stanford, who both shot 2-over-par 290. No. 12 LSU is in fourth place at 5-over-par 293 with host No. 22 Texas Tech in fifth at 297 and top-ranked Oklahoma State in sixth at 10-over 298.

Tide junior Hunter Hamrick and true freshman Cory Whitsett paced Alabama with a pair of 1-under-par rounds of 71. Both are tied for fifth place, just one shot off the chase for medalist honors where four players are tied a 2-under 70.

Hamrick, a native of Montgomery, Ala., and an honorable mention All-American a season ago, shot his lowest round of the season with a 71. He teed off the back and shot even-par 36 with two birdies and two bogeys. After making the turn, he birdied the second hole but found trouble with bogeys on No. 3 and No. 5. Hamrick closed with back-to-back birdies on the sixth and seventh holes.

Whitsett produced the Crimson Tide's most consistent round with four birdies – including three on the back nine – and three bogeys. He birdied his 16th hole of the day, Isleworth's No. 7, to finish one shot below par.

Scott Strohmeyer shot a 1-over-par 73 and is tied for 15th heading into Monday's second round.  Teeing off on the back nine, Strohmeyer shot 1-under-par on his opening-nine holes with four birdies, a bogey and a double bogey. After a birdie on No. 3 to get to 2-under par, he made four bogeys in his next five holes but birdied his final hole of the day to close his round.

Bud Cauley and Bobby Wyatt carded 4-over-par rounds of 76 and are tied for 34th. Cauley made six birdies, five bogeys, a double bogey and a triple bogey. Wyatt made two birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey.

Alabama will tee off the first hole on Monday morning for the second round of the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational at the Isleworth Country Club.
