ALFA Releases It's Opinion On Governor Riley's Tax Package

The Alabama Farmers Federation board is taking a stand against Governor Bob Riley's tax and accountability package.

The board, in a statement Monday, says the plan would tax farmers too much and raise more revenue than needed. The farm and insurance group says a survey of hundreds of its leaders found 84 percent against the Republican governor's plan, 9 percent for it and 7 percent undecided.

Riley spokesman David Azbell says Alfa made clear early in the process that it opposed putting any more money in education, Medicaid and other state services threatened by the fiscal crisis. He says the Riley plan made certain family farms would be protected and that Alabama farmers will still pay lower property taxes than the Southeast average.
