AUBURN, AL (WSFA) - ESPN is reporting an explosive allegation surrounding Auburn's Cameron Newton.

The sports outlet quotes a former Mississippi State quarterback - John Bond - who alleges a sports agent tried last year to get State to pay $180,000 for Newton to sign with the Bulldogs.

Newton, who went to Florida where he was back-up quarterback to Tim Tebow eventually settled at a community college in Texas before signing with Auburn for the 2010 season.

Auburn's media relations director says Auburn is aware of the allegation but cannot comment other than to say Newton is eligible to play for the Tigers.

A source close to Auburn's athletic department says there has not at any time been contact between former Mississippi State player (Kenny) Rogers and anyone at Auburn. There are no allegations of any wrongdoing against any coach or anyone at Auburn in the recruitment of Cam Newton.
