Trial in Auburn student slaying to start Monday

OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) - The trial of a man charged with the 2008 murder of an Auburn University student is set to begin Monday.

Courtney Lockhart of Smiths Station is charged with capital murder in the death of 18-year-old Lauren Burk of Marietta, Ga. She was a freshman at Auburn when police say Lockhart kidnapped Burk in her own car and robbed her before shooting her and then dumping her body in a roadway.

Police say the Lockhart then drove Burk's car to campus and set it on fire.

A gag order was placed on the case a month after the killing. All pretrial hearings have been closed to the media and public, and the court sealed the case to try to curb pretrial publicity.
