BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Alabama State's defense stopped Jeremiah McGinty's 2-point conversion rush with 16 seconds left to preserve a 21-19 victory over Southern University on Saturday night.
The Hornets (7-3, 6-3) clinched the Eastern Division berth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game Dec. 11 against either Texas Southern or Grambling State.
The Jaguars (2-8, 1-7) rallied in the fourth quarter. Three Alabama State penalties helped set up a field goal that cut Southern's deficit to 21-13 with 11:59 left.
Southern's final drive started from its 14 with 1:49 left. After four runs moved the ball into Alabama State territory, McGinty's 24-yard pass to Sylvester Nzekwe, with a personal foul tacked on, took it to the 3. Pass interference moved it closer, and Nzekwe ran it in from the 1.
Alabama State's Devin Dominguez threw for two first-half touchdowns and ran for another.
