Newton developments - Text messages and Milton McGregor

AUBURN, AL (WSFA) - The digging reaches new levels in the ongoing investigation of Auburn's Cam Newton. While the NCAA investigation rolls on without any official word on the standout player's eligibility, national media are focusing on text messages and Milton McGregor.

ESPN.com reports that Bill Bell, a Mississippi State booster and former player at the school, told the NCAA  that he received text messages setting payments for the recruitment of Newton.

Bell said the cell phone he received the text message on no longer works because it was damaged by water. He said he was working with his cell phone provider to retrieve the messages.

TMZ LINKS NEWTON STORY TO MILTON MCGREGOR

A Wednesday afternoon report by celebrity gossip website TMZ.com links the FBI's investigation of the Cam Newton recruiting controversy to indicted Victoryland president Milton McGregor.

TMZ reports that the FBI is asking questions involving possible links to McGregor, a report McGregor attorneys say is outrageous.

McGregor spokesman Bill Cunningham released this statement to WSFA 12 News through Joe Espy, McGregor's attorney:

"Contrary to postings on celebrity and sports blogs, Milton McGregor has never had any contact direct or indirect with Cam Newton, Cecil Newton - Cam's father, Kenny Rogers or anyone purporting to represent Cam Newton. Mr. McGregor has never been asked to provide money for any recruitment or compensation of any current or prospective student athlete including Cam Newton at Auburn or any other school, and has never provided any type of compensation in that regard period no exceptions. As a proud supporter of Auburn University Mr. McGregor wants it known that he does cheer loudly for Cam Newton and thinks he is the best athlete in college football."

McGregor faces legal troubles of his own, having been recently indicted on charges of corruption related to possible payments to Alabama legislators in a gambling vote.

Newton is a leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy having broken numerous school and SEC records during his opening season with the Auburn Tigers.

The Number 2. ranked Auburn Tigers, in contention to play for the BCS National Championship, faces rival Alabama on November 26 and will play South Carolina for the SEC Championship.

Newton remains academically and athletically eligible to play at Auburn, according to coaches. An NCAA investigation continues
