Bookworm a 'sour apple' after library thefts

ANNISTON, Ala. (AP) - An Anniston woman has been jailed on $10,000 bond after being charged with stealing more than 200 books from the local public library.

Anniston police investigator Kyle Price says 42-year-old Regina Smith was arrested Wednesday on felony theft charges. She is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 14.

Price said library officials reported in October that employees had observed a woman stealing two books from library shelves.

He says he eventually discovered that over the past couple of years, Smith had stolen 222 books worth $5,431.

Titles of the books police and library officials say Smith stole include the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer, the Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella, The Art of Brazilian Cookery, by Dolores Botafogo, and a number of murder mysteries.
