Christmas Clearinghouse in need of donations

Montgomery, AL (WSFA) - It's that time of year that many of us are wondering how we'll ever get our holiday gift list finished.

But there are some families who won't get any gifts at all this year.

That's why the Christmas Clearinghouse was founded, and it's one of the organizations that will benefit from 12's Day of Giving this Friday.

Mary Mayberry, Special Events Coordinator for the Clearinghouse said, "We have had mothers call and say it's not that their children don't need toys, but if someone could just help them with utilities, that's the only way they'll have heat in their house."

It's stories like those that reminds them of their mission-- bringing holiday joy to those in need.

"People are really, really desperate," said Mayberry.

Around 10,000 people in the River Region - including more than 6,000 children are registered with the Clearinghouse.

They take your donations and ensure they're evenly spread amongst those who need them.

"More people are able to be helped this way.  One family is not getting helped several times and another not getting helped at all," Mayberry added.

This year, the need is great. Mayberry says not only do they have more homeless than ever to serve, but donations are down more than 25% from last year.

It's a plea for help, to help them make the holidays merrier for the less fortunate.
