Holiday shipping deadline nearing

Montgomery, AL (WSFA) - It's going to be a very busy holiday shipping season, and the postal service expects that Monday will be the busiest day of the year.

Folks packed post offices in Montgomery all day, making sure they got their presents shipped in time for Christmas.

Postmaster Montgomery Donald Snipes said, "It's been very busy.  As a matter of fact, there are some people I've seen in here twice today."

With just under two weeks until Christmas, folks like Joe Wilson have several gifts to get shipped out, with some going overseas.

Wilson said, "This one is for my daughter, she's in Afghanistan, and I also have one for my granddaughter and mother-in-law."

The lines stretched all the way to the door Monday as customers came with several boxes and stacks of Christmas cards.

Montgomery resident Joyce Hodge said, "I had a bunch of cards, so I had to get stamps and put those on there.  Then, I had a gift to ship to Missouri."

If you're running behind on your shipping, but still want to get in and out fast, make sure you have you packages boxed up and ready to go before you get in line.

"Most people start to get into a panic state and then realize they don't have much time," added Postmaster Snipes.  "Go ahead and pick up your forms, delivery confirmation, and insurance and have those filled out when you come through the door."

And despite the Christmas crowds, the Postal Service won't be hiring any seasonal employees because of a nationwide hiring freeze.

Snipes said, "Like most industries, we're trying to figure out a way to do more with less."

So how can you cut costs with your holiday shipping? Officials say-- get them sent early, as workers prepare for one of the busiest shipping seasons in history.

At the post office, Wednesday is the last day to send your gift standard shipping for it to get there by Christmas. The priority mail deadline in December 21st.
