TROY, AL (WSFA) - Alabama State Troopers are releasing the names of three Pike Liberal Arts School students involved in a fatal truck vs. 18-wheeler crash Wednesday morning.
Two of the students, Jami Alexis Pierce, 15, and Brooke Lee Ledford, 14, were fatally injured when the 1997 GMC truck they were in lost control on an icy stretch of U.S. Hwy. 231.
The truck slid into an oncoming semi-truck's lane and collided with the commercial carrier.
Jesse Alexander Pierce, 17, who was driving the GMC, was listed in critical condition at last check. State troopers said none of the students was wearing a seat belt and all three were ejected from the vehicle.
The semi-truck driver, David Steven Blankenship, 49, of Greensboro, was treated at a local hospital and later released.
The teens were headed to school at the time of the crash, which happened around 7:30am two miles south of Troy.
All semester exams are canceled until after Christmas break and school has been canceled for the rest of this week, according to PLAS. However, elementary students will dismiss at the regular time Wednesday.
Prayer groups and grief counseling are available to students at this time.
