Local retailers report strong holiday sales

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Retail analysts say total holiday spending nationwide is at its highest rate since 2007.  And local retailers say it should end up as a good holiday season for their bottom line.

People like Laura Booker and her husband are continuing to shop, even though Christmas is over.

The couple stopped at Henig Furs on Carmichael Road, drawn by deep discounts.

"Their buys, they have super buys and as you can see super coats, beautiful coats," Booker said.

That's good news for President and CEO Mike Henig.  He estimates sales will end up around 30% higher this year over last year.

"Business in general for the last month or so has been phenomenal," Henig said.

Over at Marguerite's Exquisite Jewelry, owner Lyle Fields said the store had a record year, exceeding his expectations.

"The beginning of early November that did surprise me and it's stayed on strong even until today and we're two days after Christmas," Fields said.

The last two months of the year are important for retailers, as it can provide a large percentage of their revenue.

"It's makes all of the hard work over the whole year worthwhile," Fields said.  "You go back and start again in January, but it does give you a little bit of an extra there."

So after a depressing 2009, seeing more shoppers in the stores in 2010, provides hope for 2011 for many retailers.
