BayBears owe city nearly $1 million in back rent

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - The Mobile BayBears are nearly $820,000 behind in rent to the city for the use of Hank Aaron Stadium.

City officials say the Double-A baseball franchise hasn't paid its rent in full since 2006.

Mayor Sam Jones asked the City Council Tuesday to reduce the team's rent to keep the BayBears in Mobile. In exchange, the team would repair the roof.

Team President Bill Shanahan told the Mobile Press-Register that the new deal would allow the BayBears to remain. Shanahan says the recession has hurt the organization.

The new contract could cut the city's annual lease payments by nearly two-thirds.

Jones says the city initially tried to collect the unpaid rent of some $273,000 but the owners said they couldn't pay.

The BayBears are affiliated with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
