Fatal shooting stuns and angers Elmore County town

It's easy to see that multiple shots were fired into the home on Nichols Avenue near downtown Eclectic. It happened around 3 o clock Tuesday morning. Homicide investigators recovered 18 shell casings on the ground.

One of those rounds penetrated the walls of the house and hit 6-year old Kenyetta Kendrick in the back as she slept in her own bed.

Family members and friends are stunned saying all this was so unnecessary.

"These were just heartless people," said cousin Naporsha Kendrick.

Kenyetta Kendrick wasn't the only victim.

One of her uncles, 19-year old D.J. Kendrick, was hit twice in the hail of bullets, once in the left thigh and once in the left foot. He's reportedly is in stable condition at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery.

Family members believe the gunman had an on-going feud with another family member. They say he was the intended target but escaped unharmed.

"This is just a bunch of drama, he said-she said kind of thing that's been going on since the summer," said Naporsha Kendrick.

Elmore County authorities say they've taken in what they call a 'person of interest' but as of this report, no charges have been filed. Late Tuesday afternoon, authorities say they picked up another potential suspect for questioning and are now looking for a third man.

"Some of the rounds actually went through the house," said Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin.

At Eclectic Elementary School where Kenyetta was a student, counselors helped children cope with the news letting them cry and talk about losing a classmate so tragically and so early in their lives.

School officials say Kenyetta was an 'ideal' student, quiet, hardworking and loved to read.

Detectives say they are making progress and getting closer to the truth, something the Kendrick family is eager to learn as well.
