Slain young girl granddaughter of Phillies legend

TUCSON (KOLD) – Christina-Taylor Green is among the six people killed in Saturday's mass shooting in Tucson.

According to Philly.com, she was the nine-year-old granddaughter of Phillies legend Dallas Green.

On Saturday morning, Christina-Taylor Green went to the Safeway on Ina and Oracle with her neighbor in hopes of meeting U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords. She was shot and killed while her friend is recovering from surgery after a being shot.

Six people were killed, including a federal judge, and 13 were wounded when an assailant opened fire outside of the grocery store where Giffords was meeting her constituents. The congresswoman was among the wounded, suffering a gunshot wound to the head and is listed in critical condition at a nearby hospital.

Christina's grandfather, Dallas Green, lives in Delaware. He played for the Phillies in the 1960s and later managed the team to its first World Series title in 1980.

"The Phillies organization expresses our heartfelt condolences to Dallas and Sylvia and the entire Green family on the senseless, tragic loss of Christina's life," Phillies president David Montgomery said in a statement released by the team and published in the Philly.com article. "She was a talented young girl with a bright promising future. Her untimely death weighs heavily on our hearts. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the families affected by yesterday's horrific shooting."

Christina-Taylor's father is John Green, a scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the son of Dallas and Sylvia Green. John Green said his daughter had just been elected to student council at Mesa Verde Elementary School and had been interested in politics from a very young age.

Christina was one of 50 babies born on Sept. 11, 2001 and featured in a book called "Faces of Hope."

In addition to her parents and grandparents, Christina-Taylor Green is also survived by her 11-year-old brother, Dallas.

Letter from Christina-Taylor Green's school superintendent:

"Good Morning,
As a community, we are all devastated over the events of Saturday. Many of us have lost a friend or neighbor.  Some of us may have been at the event.  And all of us are heartsick and praying for recovery for the victims.  For those of us who are personally connected to some of the victims, the sense of loss and sadness is particularly profound. The death of Christina Green, our Mesa Verde 3rd grade student, is unthinkable to us all.

Please know that the Governing Board Members and  I, along with countless others, will be holding you and your school families in our thoughts and prayers as we embark on a difficult path of recovery.  Please use your  strength and wisdom to facilitate the healing process and support one another.

One of our Walker Elementary teachers, Ms. Jennifer Powers, has forwarded some information for our support of students this week after the tragedy on Saturday.  I think it can benefit us all so I am forwarding that info to you to distribute to our teachers and staff.

Initially, tomorrow we are focusing our support at Mesa Verde Elementary School.  Dr. Duley and crisis counselors will be at the school first thing in the a.m. to offer support to any students and/or staff member who need that support.  Mr. Hepler will be meeting with all staff members first thing in the morning as well.  Mr Nelson and I will also be at Mesa Verde as well.

Please let me know if additional support is needed for any students or staff members throughout the District.
We are very appreciative of the offer of help and support from our neighboring districts as we recover together.

Thank you for all you continually do for our students and one another.

Sincerely,
Vicki Balentine

Superintendent"
