Murder, assault charges filed in Dec. 31 fatal crash case

TROY, AL (WSFA) - Alabama State Troopers arrested an Abbeville man in connection with a three-vehicle crash Dec. 31, 2010, outside the city limits of Troy.

Christopher L. Barrow, 33, of Abbeville was charged with murder in the first degree and assault in the first degree, and he is being held at the Pike County Jail. His bond is set at $100,000 for the murder charge and $50,000 for the assault charge.

These charges stem from the Dec. 31 crash, which resulted in a fatality. State Troopers say a preliminary investigation shows that the 2007 Chevrolet Impala that Barrow was driving was traveling north on U.S. 231 when his vehicle crossed over the center line and struck a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche driven by Christopher V. Valverde, 18, of Troy. Barrow's vehicle then struck a 2000 Chevrolet C1500 driven by Norman B. Baxley, 38, of Dothan.

Francene N. Philips, 32, of Abbeville was a passenger in Barrows' vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene by Pike County Coroner Jerry Williams.  Barrow, Valverde, Baxley and Billy Fulton, who was a passenger in Baxley's vehicle, were transported to Troy Regional Medical Center and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

State Troopers continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
