Auburn picked to win the SEC West

AUBURN - The Auburn football team has been predicted to win the 2003 Southeastern Conference championship in a vote of media at the 2003 SEC Football Media Days that concluded Thursday in Birmingham.  The Tigers also had three players, running back Carnell Williams and linebackers Karlos Dansby and Dontarrious Thomas, named to the pre-season All-SEC team.

The Tigers were on 45 of 78 ballots as the SEC Champions followed by Georgia on 12 ballots, Tennessee on 10, LSU 6, Ole Miss and Florida two each and Arkansas one.  Auburn was predicted to defeat Georgia in the SEC Championship Game.

Auburn was predicted to win the West on 60 of 78 ballots.  LSU was second, on 13 ballots, Arkansas third, Alabama fourth, Ole Miss fifth and Mississippi State sixth.

Williams, Dansby and Thomas were named to the All-SEC first team, while running back Ronnie Brown and defensive tackle DeMarco McNeil were selected to the second-team pre-season All-SEC team.

Five Alabama players were named to the All-SEC preseason first team: offensive linemen Wesley Britt and Justin Smiley, running back Shaud Williams, linebacker Brooks Daniels, and defensive lineman Antwan Odom.
