State Senator Hank Sanders Says He Supports Governor's Plan

State Senator Hank Sanders says he supports Governor Bob Riley's tax and accountability package.

The Selma Democrat is lending his voice in an effort to boost taxpayer support. Sanders recently recorded a message that's being relayed to voters statewide. Sanders, who is chairman of the Alabama Finance and Taxation Education Fund, calls Riley's proposals -- quote -- "the people's tax package." He said the average citizen will receive a tax cut under the plan.

Sanders characterized opponents of the plan, who are also running ads statewide, as big land owners, out of state corporations and the wealthy who fear they'll have to pay their fair share of taxes for the first time. Sanders said a majority of black lawmakers support the governor's package, even though some remain upset over Riley's veto of a bill that would have restored voting rights to former felons.
