Inaugural Ball celebrates Gov. Bentley and the state

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Monday's Inauguration festivities wrapped up with a gala reception and ball at the Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center in Montgomery, the first Inaugural Ball here since 2003.

Governor Robert Bentley and First Lady Diane Bentley arrived just before 8 p.m. to thunderous applause.  Diane Bentley was wearing a dress designed by Anthony Williams of Birmingham.  Williams was a former contest on Bravo TV's "Project Runway."

It was keeping in the theme of the inauguration: Celebrate Alabama.  And it was not only a celebration of the governor's inauguration, but a new beginning in the state.

"It's just a celebration of all the hard work that Governor Bentley has done in getting elected," said state Rep. Jay Love, of Montgomery.   "And being a legislator, it's exciting to be here with all of the constitutional officers."

Veterans of balls past and those here for the first time both found something to enjoy.

"Being with everybody and celebrating this wonderful inauguration and we may even dance," said Marilyn Hopper, who attended the ball with her husband, Former Chief Justice Perry Hooper.

"This is my first ever occasion like this," said Kimberly Headley.   "I'm very excited.  I think Alabama is so lucky to have all of this going on in this beautiful venue, it's very exciting."

Gov. Bentley thanked his family and the people of Alabama for their support.

"We're going to everything that we can to live up to that trust," Gov. Bentley said.  "To live up to what they have asked us to do and that's to work hard for them every day, do it an honorable way, always be honest, always be truthful and to do what's right."

After Gov. Bentley spoke to the crowd, he and the First Lady danced to "You Light Up My Life."  It was a last chance to celebrate before the real work of governing begins.
