MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Alabama ranks second in the nation for the amount of awards and dollars from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program, officials announced Friday.
Over $5.69 million dollars will soon be coming to 54 fire departments across Alabama.
"The State of Alabama should be extremely proud of their firefighters," Governor Robert Bentley said. "They aggressively went after these grants while continuing to meet the needs of the people they serve."
The AFG program helps firefighters and other first responders obtain vital equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other necessary resources. The grant money will be spent to combat fire and related hazards.
"I congratulate them for the day-to-day hard work, but for also going the extra mile to secure federal dollars. As the incoming director, it's great to know that I have such dedicated first responders with which to work," said Alabama Homeland Security Director Spencer Collier.
The AFG program is supported by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency.
