MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The tussle over Taco Bell's bolstered beef is moving beyond press releases. The king of quick-serve, Mexi-themed chow is now taking its case to the masses via social media, namely YouTube and Facebook.
While Taco Bell's PR move to "Think outside the bun" with a YouTube and Facebook damage control campaign may ultimately garner large customer support, at the time of this article's publishing only 425 views had been made on the YouTube clip - available imbedded above - and just 500 comments had been made on the company's Facebook page.
Taco Bell President Greg Creed took to the internet's video vault in a 1:39 long clip addressing the company's "35 million amazing and loyal customers" who visit each week and to assure them that the fast food giant's meat is 88 percent beef. That's well above claims of just 36 percent being lodged by Montgomery, Ala. based law firm Beasley Allen.
Creed, wearing a crisp Taco Bell shirt and speaking from a location that looks like a trendy Taco Bell, smiles as he lets video viewers in on the company's secret ingredients, most of which were already known.
"THANK YOU FOR SUING US."
The company isn't entirely abandoning traditional media's power to get its message across. Full page advertisements in the New York Times, USA Today and the Wall Street Journal proclaim "Thank you for suing us." in a bold headline, before going into detail about what the company cooks.
BEASLEY ALLEN REACTS
Asked for comment on Taco Bell's latest statements, Beasley Allen released this notice:
"The facts alleged in the filed lawsuit against Taco Bell are absolutely 100% correct. We will try this lawsuit in the Federal Court in California, not the press. We have no further comment on Taco Bell's latest advertisements or statements as we will do our work on this case in the trial court." - W. Daniel "Dee" Miles, III
Move over "Charlie". You might have bitten your brother's finger, but Beasley Allen took a big bite out of one of corporate America's darlings. It's doubtful the case will end with a lot of smiles and laughing.
