Army Specialist Joshua Lancaster laid to rest

Millbrook, AL (WSFA) - Another young hero was laid to rest Monday.  Army Specialist Joshua Lancaster died serving his country in Afghanistan.

Mourners filled the Church at the Brook in Millbrook to honor his life one last time.

Matthew Segrest said, "He was a man that put duty and honor above selfishness, a hero."

Segrest is a longtime family friend of the family and watched Joshua grow up; he never imagined attending his funeral.

"He was more like a nephew or brother to me than a friend," he said.  "Everybody looked up to him, anyone that ever knew him."

Joshua's friends say the turnout despite Monday's dreary weather was a testament to the kind of person that he was. Even folks in the community who didn't know him very well say they felt it was important that they were there.

"I just wanted to pay my respects, and the least I could do was to bring my daughter here," said Lisa Holmes.  She and her daughter Isabella came to the funeral clutching American flags.

She said, "I wanted to show her why we are free to go where we want and to choose to do the things that we do."

It's an emotional lesson in the price of freedom, as they honored another young soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice for his country.

Army Specialist Lancaster was buried with military honors at Brookside Memorial Gardens. He's survived by his wife and mother.
