MPS Consolidation Solutions

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The public meetings about the Montgomery Public Schools consolidation plan are over and a decision has to be made. Will schools close? Will teachers be laid off? WSFA 12 News is looking for your solutions now that the meetings have come to an end. The Board is expected to consider its proposals in a special meeting February 15th at 5:30pm.

Here are the MPS plans:

Why Change? - The School board believes change must happen because some schools are in poor condition, a belief that consolidation would maximize efficient use of resources, shifting demographics, a reduction of operating funds/proration and the DeJong Report.

The Board believes the closure/consolidation of the following nine schools will result in annual savings of more than $2 million and a one time savings of $1.6 million by reducing personnel.

  1. Hayneville Road Elementary
    (Morris, MLK and Catoma)
  2. Harrison Elementary
    (Davis and McKee)
  3. Head Elementary
    (Morningview, Dalraida, Flowers and Dozier)
  4. Seth Johnson Elementary - Becomes Floyd Middle Magnet -
    (Floyd and McKee)
  5. MacMillan Elementary Magnet
    (Houston Hill Middle)
  6. McIntyre Middle
    (Southlawn and Bellingrath Middle) 
  7. Houston Hill Middle - Becomes MacMillan Elementary Magnet -
    (Capitol Heights, Goodwyn, Brewbaker and Bellingrath Middle)
  8. Floyd Middle Magnet
    (Seth Johnson Elementary)
  9. Daisy Lawrence 
    (Hippy Program moves to Fairwest)
