Judge hearing request to delay Ala. gambling trial

OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) - A federal judge will hear arguments on whether to delay the trial in Alabama's gambling corruption case, which is scheduled to start in 1½ months.

U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson set a hearing on the delay requests for midday Tuesday in Opelika.

Most of the 10 defendants are seeking a delay. They say they can't get ready for trial by April 4 because there are thousands of pages of documents to go through. Federal prosecutors say they are ready to go.

The 10 defendants are accused of buying and selling votes on pro-gambling legislation.
