MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Two Montgomery teens are being held in a Montgomery Youth Facility after they were arrested for calling in a fake 911 report to police.
A 14-year-old female and a 16-year-old female were arrested for falsely reporting a student had been shot in a Carver High School bathroom. The school was immediately locked down.
When police couldn't find a victim they attempted to call the number that reported the shooting back only to find it had been disconnected.THe reported victim was found safe and unharmed.
Montgomery Public Schools Superintendent Barbara W. Thompson praised Montgomery Police, Carver High School administrators and school security officers for the quick arrest of the students involved in the shooting hoax. The School District is seeking expulsion of both students.
"The police and our staff are to be commended for their quick work in identifying these suspects," said Thompson. "This is a serious charge. The suspects may have thought of it as a prank, but it cost the city scarce resources and caused unnecessary worry to parents, students and the community."
This offense is considered a Class A misdemeanor. The girls will face consequences both from the city and the school district. For the school district this type of offense generally carries an automatic suspension and recommendation for expulsion. In addition, those who commit such acts could face repayment of the city expenses to responding to the call.
