Auburn to open baseball season Friday night

AUBURN, Ala. – The curtain rises on the 2011 Auburn baseball season on Friday at 6pm when Auburn plays host to Arkansas State at Plainsman Park. The defending Southeastern Conference Western Division Champion, Auburn will also face Virginia and UAB, respectively, during the weekend tournament.

"It's that time of year," Auburn Head Coach John Pawlowski said. "A lot of hard work goes into the off-season and the preseason and the team is anxious to get out there and play."

Sophomore right-hander Slade Smith gets the Opening Day nod on the mound after going 4-0 with a 4.65 ERA during his freshman campaign in 2010. Following him in the rotation will be junior southpaw Cory Luckie, who was 6-4 with a 5.91 in 19 appearances (15 starts) last year. Auburn has not determined its starter for Sunday's finale.

Arkansas State will throw senior right-handed pitcher Andy Ferguson (5-5, 4.71) against Auburn while Virginia is set to send senior righty Tyler Wilson (8-4, 3.41) up to the mound against Auburn. UAB junior right-hander Michael Busby will throw the Sunday finale.

Game times for the Auburn games this weekend are 6pm on Friday, 1pm on Saturday and 3pm on Sunday. The schedule for the rest of the weekend has Virginia and UAB facing off at 2pm on Friday, UAB and Arkansas State starting at 5pm on Saturday, and Arkansas State and Virginia starting at 11am on Sunday.

Tickets remain for the entire weekend and fans need just one ticket per day.
