DADEVILLE, AL (WTVM) - Harvey Updyke was renting a home on Lake Martin in Dadeville, AL.  He is a retired Texas State Trooper.  ESPN is reporting he named his kids Crimson and Bear.

"When Bear Bryant died, I was living in TX and I really did not understand the Auburn/Alabama rivalry.  A good friend of mine sent me a copy of the newspaper showing Auburn students rolling Toomer's Corner celebrating Bryant's death," explained Updyke on The Finebaum Radio Network and WJOX FM.

The University of Alabama fan admitted on the sports radio talk show that he poisoned the trees at Toomer's Corner.  Updyke is in the Lee County Detention Facility charged with criminal mischief.

Eventually he will probably return to Dadeville.  His lake neighbor said, "I cannot imagine he would be received very well, even by Alabama fans."

James Whitman said, "I did not know I had this neighbor. I am an Auburn guy and I feel like something bad is going to happen. He was so brazen, stupid.  It is hard to believe someone is that stupid to go on a syndicated radio show and tell your name and tell the chemical."

The intensity of the rivalry between the tide and the tigers is now being questioned.

"It makes you wonder about the rivalry and how intense it has gotten and whether it is worth it anymore and what is going to happen next"

Whitman said, "It is worse now. This is really going to bring out the fringe elements on both sides. Nobody wants that."
