Trojan tennis team claims first victory of the season

DELAND, Fla. After facing some of the toughest competition the nation had to offer, the 70th-ranked Troy University men's tennis team knocked Stetson from the ranks of the undefeated and in the process earned their first victory of the season.

However, it was as easy as it may sounds, as the Trojans stormed back from dropping the first two matches to claim a 5-2 victory.

The day did not start out well for the Trojans as they dropped two of three doubles matches to Stetson, resulting in the Hatters getting the first point of the match. The first match to end was at number three doubles where the Stetson team of Alexander Hackett and Chris Swanteson defeated Troy's Mansingh Athare and Niklas Jonsson, 8-5.

Stetson clinched the point when the doubles team of Cesare Gallo and Didrik Berg defeated Troy's Anas Rouchdi and Sami Ghorbel at number two doubles, 8-6. With the point in hand for Stetson, the Trojans team of Branko Weber and Mario Rolemberg claimed an 8-6 victory over 40th-ranked Maksim Levanovich and Njal Stene, 8-6.

Leading 1-0 overall in the match, Stetson took a 2-0 lead when Maksim Levanovich defeated Troy's Branko Weber 6-0, 6-4 at number one singles. It was the only match on the day that was decided in straight sets, as the other five went three sets each.

The Trojans closed the gap to 2-1 when Sami Ghorbel won his match at number three over Stetson's Didrik Berg 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Troy didn't waste any time tying the match as Anas Rouchdi claimed a three-set victory at number two over Stetson's Cesare Gallo 4-6, 6-3, 6-2; leaving four matches on the court and all four in the third set.

When Rouchdi left the court, the Trojans were ahead in two of the matches in the third set and tied in the other.

And it didn't take long for the Trojans to claim their first victory of the season and knock Stetson from the ranks of the undefeated as a pair of Trojans closed out their matches. Freshman Niklas Jonsson claimed a 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Stetson's Alexander Hackett at number six to give the Trojans a chance to clinch the match with one more victory.

That victory came quickly as freshman Jamie Eccleton claimed the victory over Stetson's Njal Stene 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 in a hard-fought match to win at number five and clinch the Trojans first victory of the season. Just for good measure, senior Mario Rolemberg closed out his match at number four singles with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 victory over Stetson's Hans Adrien.

The Trojans return to the courts on Friday afternoon in Orlando as they visit the University of Central Florida.
