Farmers markets closing

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - They're a staple of Montgomery, two farmers markets operated by the State Department of Agriculture.

Now, budget cuts for the department have forced the state to shut them down.

Agriculture Commissioner John Mcmillian says the farmers markets on West Fairview Avenue and at the state fairgrounds on Federal Drive will close March 1st.

He says both are operating at what he called "a significant loss."

Mcmillian says the closings are part of the department's way of coping with a $2 million budget cut.

No word yet on what will become of the two properties.
