Montgomery Father On The Run For Weeks Is Found In Florida

Authorities say they've arrested a man who walked out of a Montgomery County courtroom in May after his attorney told him he would be sentenced to 99 years in prison.

U.S. Marshals arrested 30-year-old Elbert Gene Dillard Tuesday after learning he was living with relatives in Winter Haven, Florida. Dillard was charged in September 2002 with striking his three-year-old son in the head and placing him in a bathtub of scalding water. Dillard pleaded guilty to first-degree assault of a child and was out on bond pending his sentencing hearing in May, when his attorney told him the judge was going to sentence him to 99 years in prison. When the judge called a recess to confer with attorneys, Dillard apparently walked out of the courtroom and never came back. The judge imposed the 99-year sentence anyway, which Dillard must begin serving when he returns to Alabama, as early as next week.
