Bama freshman named Co-SEC Golfer of the Week

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. Alabama freshman Stephanie Meadow was named the Co-SEC Golfer of the Week on Thursday the conference office announced.

Meadow, who captured medalist honors at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic for her first collegiate victory, shared the recognition with Kentucky's Ashleight Albrecht. Albrecht was a co-medalist at the Central Florida Challenge where the Wildcats finished fourth.

Meadow finished at 4-under-par 212 to edge Florida State's Maria Salinas by one shot and Georgia's Marta Silva Zamora by two strokes in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, at the Rio Mar Country Club. Her final round 69 and 54-hole total of 212 were both career bests for Meadow, who won in just her fifth tournament since joining the Crimson Tide in August.

Her effort helped the top-ranked Alabama women claim their third tournament victory in five outings this season. Meadow is ranked 26th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index and seventh in the SEC in scoring average at 72.33.

As a team, the Crimson Tide boast four of the top seven scoring averages in the Southeastern Conference this season. Brooke Pancake is second (71.13), Camilla Lennarth is third (71.27) and Jennifer Kirby is sixth (72.13) along with Meadow in seventh.

Meadow's 72.33 stroke average marks the third straight Tide rookie to threaten the UA freshman scoring record. Brooke Pancake first broke the mark in 2009 with a 74.06 average and Jennifer Kirby then eclipsed that last season with a 73.06.

The No. 1 Tide returns to action on Feb. 27-March 1 at the Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate at the English Turn Country Club in New Orleans, La.
