Bama women’s tennis makes first appearance at Blue Gray National Tennis Classic

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The 36th-ranked Alabama women's tennis team (5-1) will head to Montgomery, Ala. to take part in the 2011 Blue Gray National Tennis Classic that is being held at Lagoon Park Feb. 25-27. This is the first year the tournament has invited women's teams as it has traditionally been a field of 16 men's teams. The Crimson Tide is slated to face No. 22 Oklahoma (5-1) in its first match on Friday at 8:30 a.m. CT.

"We're thrilled to be involved in the inaugural Blue Gray National Tennis Classic for the women," Alabama Head Coach Jenny Mainz said. "This is an outstanding event that showcases some of the best women's teams in college tennis. It's a great way for the Crimson Tide to represent the state of Alabama."

Joining the Tide and Sooners in the eight-team field is No. 64 Auburn, No. 48 DePaul, No. 19 Notre Dame, No. 43 Ohio State, No. 51 Utah and No. 9 Virginia. Each team is guaranteed three matches.

Alabama last played a pair of home matches on Feb. 12 and Feb. 13, taking down UCF and Chattanooga in 7-0 decisions. The Tide's last three wins have all been sweeps.

In the latest polls, Alabama has three singles and a pair of doubles teams ranked. Freshman Mary Anne Macfarlane leads the trio of Tide netters at No. 24. She is followed by sophomore Alexa Guarachi at No. 85 and junior Courtney McLane, who comes in at No. 91. In doubles, Guarachi and McLane moved up to No. 4, while Macfarlane and sophomore Antonia Foehse stand at No. 43.
