Parents outraged over renovations delay at local rec center

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - There's only one term to describe how parents of children who go to the Montgomery Therapeutic Recreation Center feel.

"Frustrated...extremely frustrated," says Linda Turner.

They all have children who swim in the pool there and they have been pleading with directors to renovate the locker rooms--where mold and mildew have plagued the walls for years, now.

"The mold just keeps of course getting worse the longer nothing's done about it," says Chyrl Willis.

"The locker room is very disgusting because when we shower after practice, I normally don't shower at all," says Karen Willis, who swims in the pool every week.

Center directors told WSFA 12 News last summer a complete overhaul was scheduled for the locker rooms in October.  That was before they found other areas in need of work.

"We have been talking with an architect. He has raised some questions about the heating and air conditioning system and the venting in the locker rooms," says Kay McCreery, Recreation Superintendent with the Montgomery Parks and Recreation Department.

Officials say they're not deliberately trying to hold up the process. In fact, they're trying to make sure that everything needing updating gets included in the plan before the work even begins.

"It does look like we're not moving, but we are taking care of the behind the scenes things first," adds McCreery.

She asks parents to be patient.

"I mean, we've been frustrated for so long and given so many excuses.  I'm still skeptical.  I'll believe it when I see it," says concerned parent, Linda Turner.

Parks and Recreation officials received a grant for the renovations.

Directors say once they're done, everything in the locker room will comply with the Americans with Disability Act.
