Jerrel Jernigan Diary Entry #3 --- 2/28/11 Back from Indy
I just wrapped up with the combine in Indianapolis. I think I did fairly well with most of the drills.
I think I could improve on my forty time, which I know in my heart that I'm faster than that (ran 4.46).
I get another chance to do better on Friday at my Pro Day in Troy, so I'm not worried that time.
The experience up there was pretty tiring. The first night we arrived there (Thursday), they made me get MRI's on my elbow and knee, and that took about 2 hours just to get through those tests.
After that, we went back to our hotel. A cool surprise was that they gave us like 3 or 4 bags full of Under Armour gear.
The second day (Friday) we woke up at 5:30am and had to take a drug test first thing. After that, we went to a room where doctors from each team examined us further.
It almost felt like an auction. The players are sitting on a table and they call your name out and talk a bit about you and then call out any injuries you may have.
Every team doctor then basically comes to you and starts poking on you and asks you if it hurts when they twist or turn something. That lasted all day until about 5:00 in the afternoon.
Then we went to a place called the The Train Station, where scouts were everywhere and ready to interview us as soon as we walked in the door.
The third day (Saturday), we did a few a drills and then we had to weigh in and do the bench press.
I lifted 225 lbs. 11 times, and I measured in at just under 5'9" and 185 lbs, which was pretty much where I wanted to be at.
And then Sunday was our day on the field, and I feel like I did well overall.
A player I got to work with who impressed me in the drills was (Arkansas quarterback) Ryan Mallett. He threw to me during a lot of my drills and I was the only receiver to catch one of his deep balls during his drills.
Overall, it was a great experience for me. I met with around 18 teams and all of them told me I did an outstanding job in the meetings and on the board work sessions.
The board work was where they would put up plays from this past season and ask me about my responsibilities on certain plays and then to identify things like the quarterback's reads and what coverages the defense were playing.
This week, I'll be back in Alabama and my main focus is resting and then gearing up for the Pro Day on Friday at Troy.
After that I'll be able to get some off time and maybe even sneak in a little fun in during Spring Break with my friends before settling back in and gearing up for the draft in April.
