Governor Loses Republican Party Vote

Governor Bob Riley lost an important vote in his own political party over the weekend. The State Republican Executive Committee, meeting Saturday at Orange Beach, voted 122-to-100 to encourage Alabama citizens to vote against Riley's tax and accountability plan on September ninth.

The Republican Governor attended the party meeting. Riley said he expected to lose the party vote, but he was surprised at the closeness. He said he didn't know he had that much support within his party.

A week earlier, the executive board of the State Democratic Party endorsed Riley's plan. Support has also come from the Business Council of Alabama and several other business groups, as well as several religious groups.
