MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - WSFA 12 News has learned that the Department of Veterans Affairs has chosen a preliminary location for its new medical clinic. The site is on Chantilly Parkway and Ryan Road, near the Home Depot, inside the Montgomery city limits.
The site is owned jointly by Dubose Corporation and Kyser Property Management. Kyser told WSFA 12 News the VA sent a letter confirming the Chantilly Parkway location as their first choice. Montgomery County Commission Vice-President Reid Ingram says he talked to VA officials in Washington, who told him the same thing.
"They wanted somewhere there was easy access, there were hotels, and there were restaurants for people to get something to eat," Ingram said.
Ingram said the clinic could bring a number of jobs to the area, both during and after construction.
Mayor Todd Strange told WSFA 12 News he has not been notified of any decision, but said the Montgomery Mall site is not being considered as a location.
City and county officials had wanted to locate the clinic at the mall location. Since that's not going to happen, they now have to figure out what's next for the site.
"The problem with the Montgomery Mall is it's very complicated when you've got so many owners, you got 7 or 8 owners that own that piece of property and it's hard to get everybody together," Ingram said.
Even though a preliminary site for the clinic has been picked, Kyser said there is still a long process before construction would start. They haven't even started talking about prices, but Kyser and Ingram are confident a deal can be worked out. The clinic could open as early as next year.
