The City of Dothan announces the "Champions Helping Champions" fundraising game

DOTHAN, AL - The City of Dothan would like to formally announce the upcoming "Champions Helping Champions" fundraising game. The game will feature a match-up between Dothan's Special Olympics Volleyball Team, who are the reigning National Champions, and players from Auburn University's 2010 National Championship Football Team.

Confirmed players from Auburn's 2010 Championship Team are Kodi Burns, Zac Etheridge, Demond Washington, Neil Caudle, Zach Clayton, Bart Eddins, and Watson Downs. The game will also feature players from Auburn's previous undefeated football seasons in 1957, 1993, and 2004. Those players include Antarrious Williams, Joe Cope, Jeremy Ingle, Will Herring (linebacker for Seattle Seahawks), Harold Morrow (former NFL fullback), Tommy Lorino (former player in the Canadian Football League), Jackie Burkett (former NFL center), and Lloyd Nix. Former Auburn and NFL player Tommie Agee will also be in attendance....and the list of players is continuously growing!

The 2010 Special Olympics Volleyball Team Members are Joyce Adams, Jay Bighems, Elizabeth Bronold, James Coleman, Charles Fournier, William Gill, B.J. Gray, Gregory Guilford, Andrew Neve, Robert Shaw, Michael Springfield, Robbie Wilson. The team is coached by Angie Lowe, Barbie Nelson, and Elston Jones.

The "Champions Helping Champions" game will be held on April 7, 2011 at 7:20 p.m. in the Northview High School Gym. Before the game, an autograph session will be held from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. for ticket holders. The public is also invited to witness the Special Olympic Torch Run at 7:00 p.m., which will feature local Special Olympians, Auburn University athletes, the Dothan Police Department, the Houston County Sheriff's Office, and the ABC Enforcement Agency. The Torch Run will begin in the Northview High School parking lot and conclude inside the gym.

During the autograph session, memorabilia items will be available for purchase. Ticket holders can have these items autographed or bring an item of their own. However, each athlete will only be permitted to sign one item. Timing for the autograph session is limited, so arrive early.

This fundraising event is designed to help raise funds to support the local Special Olympics National Championship team as they represent the United States of America at the World Championship games in Athens, Greece.

Tickets are $5.00 and free for kids six and under. Presale tickets will go on sale Monday, March 14, 2011 and can be purchased at the Leisure Services Central Office located on the first floor of the Civic Center. Any remaining tickets will be available for purchase at the door on the day of the game.

The City of Dothan would like to extend a special thank you to Auburn Lettermen Club members Tom Bryan and Larry Blakeney for their assistance in coordinating this event. Bryan is a former football player for Geneva County High School, Auburn University, and the Continental Football League where he earned All-Pro honors in 1967. Blakeney is a former Auburn quarterback and the current head football coach for Troy University.

Dothan's local Special Olympics program is coordinated by the Department of Leisure Services' Therapeutic Recreation Program. The goal of the Special Olympics is to provide opportunities for intellectually challenged children and adults to participate as productive and respected citizens, by offering them a fair opportunity to develop and demonstrate their skills and talents through sports training and competition. The Special Olympics is also designed to increase the public's awareness of the capabilities and needs of participating athletes.
