Montgomery letter mailed in '44 heads to addressee

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A letter postmarked from Montgomery on Aug. 9, 1944, is finally headed for its intended recipient.

The letter was addressed to "Miss R.T. Fletcher, American Red Cross Station Hospital, Camp Roberts, California." It was delivered in February to Gary McMaster, curator for the camp's historical museum.

The postal service couldn't explain why the letter took so long to deliver.

McMaster contacted the Montgomery Advertiser, and the story received worldwide publicity.

Fletcher's daughter heard about it and contacted McMaster. She said her mother, who is still living at an undisclosed location, was an American Red Cross volunteer who coordinated entertainment projects at the camp hospital.

The letter was from Fletcher's brother, who has died. The daughter plans to hand-deliver the letter to her mother.
