Fire Damages Ozark DHR Building

An early morning fire destroyed the Alabama Department of Human Resources office building in Ozark, causing an estimated one million dollars in losses.

Ozark Fire Chief Dempsey Barefield said a police officer spotted the blaze about 4:25 a.m. Saturday and fire crews were on the scene by 4:28 a.m. But he said the fire had already broken through the roof of the building. Barefield said the cause of the fire remained under investigation as DHR Commissioner Bill Fuller prepares to meet with Ozark officials.

The 10 year old brick veneer building on Carroll Avenue was located about a block from the Dale Medical Center and in an area of medical offices. Barefield estimated the losses at "well over one million dollars," when computers and other equipment are included.
