MONTGOMERY, AL - The Alabama State women's and men's golf teams will be in action Monday in the Butler Benbow Invitational at Jacksonville Beach, Fla.
The Jacksonville Beach Golf Club will host the event that will feature 15 men's and 15 women's teams in the two-day, 36-hole tournament.
It's the season opener for the men's team, which has finished second in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament each of the past two seasons to nemesis Jackson State. Juniors John Montgomery, a two-time first team All-SWAC selection, and Scott Benson are the only two upperclassmen on the team which has five freshmen.
"I'm excited. Our men's program has worked very hard," ASU head golf coach Gary Grandison said. "Our guys are working hard in the weight room, running the track well, putting forth the extra effort to prepare for the spring season. We have five freshmen that are motivated to reach our goals this spring."
The Lady Hornets began their season two weeks ago at the South Alabama Lady Jaguar Invitational, finishing tied for 10th with conference foe Jackson State.
Freshman Amelie Buhl was ASU's top performer, ranking among the top five early in the tournament before finishing tied for 23rd. Sophomore Aileen Meredith also finished in the top half of the field.
"The women's team showed they could compete against some larger Division I institutions," Grandison said. "I've learned we have to spend a lot more time in preparation on the short game. If they can continue to show their commitment toward improving and growing, then I'm really optimistic about this spring for the women's program."
