DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - Family members say former Dothan Police Chief Herbert Deal Jr. has died. He was 87. Deal's son-in-law John White, who served with him as a policeman, said Deal died of natural causes early Saturday morning at his home in Dothan.

Deal was head of the department from 1956 to 1960, and at age 34, was the youngest police chief in the city's history.

White, a former Dothan police chief who is now a defense lawyer, said no one has broken that record.

The two men began working together in 1974 when White was about 20.

White said Deal ordered him to ask his daughter out on a date. The couple married in 1976.

The funeral is Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Beulah Baptist Church in Dothan.
