Volunteer firefighter arrested on arson charge

SMITHS STATION, AL (WSFA) - A Lee County Volunteer Firefighter is behind bars for a charge that seems to be counterproductive.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office arrested 21-year-old Casey Daniel Owens, a volunteer firefighter, for of all things - arson.

On March 11 the Lee County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from a Smiths Station resident reporting they had just heard a large explosion and could see smoke pouring out of a vacant residence in the 1600 block of Lee Road 298.

The Smiths Station Fire Unit responded and managed to snuff out the fire, but not before the home was considered a complete loss.

Witnesses in the area reported seeing a male suspect fleeing the scene prior to the explosion. After an investigation conducted jointly by the Lee County Sheriff's Office and the State Fire Marshall's Office, Owens was taken into custody.

Owens was arrested and charged with one count of Arson in the Second Degree. He was released from the Lee County Detention Facility after posting a $10,000 bond.

This case is still under investigation. If you have any information about this case or any other, you are urged to contact the Lee County Crime Stoppers at 1-888-522-7847.
