AU tennis defeats S. Fla., 5-2

TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 26 Auburn men's tennis team defeated No. 50 South Florida, 5-2, at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts, in Tampa, Fla. With the win, the Tigers move to 9-6 on the year. 

"It was a very tough match," head coach Eric Shore said. "It is a tough place to play, everybody knows that. They have slow courts, and with the warm conditions, it makes very difficult, but our guys hung in there. This match will make us better." 

Auburn came out strong in doubles, winning all three matches by a score of 8-5. Lucas Loppasso and Rafael Rondino defeated Wael Kalani and Federico Sabogal on court three. 

In the No. 2 position, No. 63 Alex Stamchev and Andreas Mies clinched the doubles point by beating Yannick Yoshizawa and Romain Deridder. On court one, Tim Puetz and Daniel Cochrane toppled Lucas Jovita and Jamal Adderley to finish off the sweep. 

In singles, No. 121 Mies cruised past USF's Sabogal, 6-0, 6-3. No. 31 Puetz gave Auburn a 3-0 advantage over the Bulls by defeating No. 73 Lucas Jovita, 6-2, 6-1. 

South Florida received its first point of the match from Wael Kalani, who defeated Auburn's Tim Hewitt, 6-4, 6-3. The Bulls would cut the Auburn lead to 3-2 after Yoshizawa beat the Tigers' Rondino in three sets, (3-6, 6-3, 7-5). 

Auburn clinched the win with a victory from No. 104 Stamchev, who completed a three-set victory over Adderley, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4. No. 105 Cochrane finished out the five-hour match with a 6-7, 7-4, 7-5 win over USF's Deridder. 

Up next, the Tigers will head to the Volunteer State to take on Southeastern Conference rival No. 24 Vanderbilt on Sunday at 1 p.m.
