TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama football team continued its spring practice schedule on Friday with a two-hour workout in full pads at the Thomas-Drew Practice Facility in front of an estimated 1,200 coaches from around the region who are attending the 2011 Alabama Coaching Clinic.
It was the first day in full pads for the 2011 Crimson Tide, who held workout No. 3 of the 15-practice spring schedule. Alabama will close out its first week of practice on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Spring practice concludes on Saturday, April 17, with the A-Day Game at Bryant-Denny Stadium. A-Day will be broadcast live by ESPNU at 2 p.m.
High school coaches from around the region taking part in the 2011 Alabama Coaching Clinic were on hand for Friday's practice following speeches from New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan and former Miami (Fla.) coach Randy Shannon , as well as former UA greats Jarrett Johnson and DeMeco Ryans. Current members of the Alabama coaches and championship high school coaches also addressed the group.
"This is a great program under Coach Saban," New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said after addressing the gathering of coaches at the Alabama Coaches Clinic on Friday. "There is always going to be great players at Alabama.
"I've had a lot of success with Alabama players in the past. You get tough guys that are well coached. They come right in the league and they're able to play."
The 1,200 high school coaches attending the clinic will also hear from UA head coach Nick Saban and legendary Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden on Friday evening. Saturday speakers at the 2011 Alabama Coaching Clinic include Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Jim McElwain and special teams coordinator Bobby Willimas, followed by Philadelphia eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Fred Pagac and Vikings defensive line coach Karl Dunbar.
